PC Scrap into PC Art!   Clock Art
Don't Wind Up In A Landfill
Artist Statement

Larry Smith became interested in electronics and how things worked when he was a young boy growing up in rural south central Mississippi.  At the age of 12 he earned his first amateur (ham) license and thus became hooked on vacuum tubes, Morse code and everything associated with the hobby.

His first experience with investigating how things worked began when he decided to disassemble his uncle’s Ford tractor.  This was done without his uncle’s knowledge but he was aware of the piles of parts when he came to drive the tractor off the farm on Monday morning.  Needless to say, Larry was severely reprimanded for his actions and he has almost forgotten the pain he endured.  After the incident he set his goals somewhat more realistic with old pumps, motors, fans, radios, and yes, clocks.  He believes he was better at seeing how they work than returning them to working order.  Perhaps this is the reason he has such a passion with the art form before you today.  He has been exposed to thousands of electronic parts and devices and gadgets and always intrigued with how they work. After he carefully determines this, he is usually not interested in restoring them to their original condition.  PC SCRAP INTO ART is a perfect way to continue his passion and ideas.  The final product is a beautiful piece of techno art which also gives one the correct time of day.

Larry built his first techno/analog clock using printed circuit boards about 20 years ago. His ideas developed and solidified during those years and continue to be transformed into the art form you see in his work today.  As a former environmental engineer and scientist, he understands the need to do our part to prevent unnecessary waste in a landfill.  These clocks are a tiny part of such a philosophy.  The clocks are made by hand and each one is unique and different.
